Overview

This qualification is aimed at learners who currently work, or want to work, in construction and successful completion will enable you to move on to take the CITB health, safety and environment test, and then apply for the new Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) Green Card. This card allows access to construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker.


From the 1st July 2014, as a mandatory part of the application for a CSCS Green Card, you must be able to provide a relevant certificate that provides evidence of your knowledge and understanding of health and safety in a construction environment. This includes those looking to enter the construction industry as well as those renewing their CSCS card. This qualification is acknowledged as one of the best ways of providing this evidence.

This qualification has been accredited by Ofqual.

Our Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment consists of the following:

  1. Know the principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work
  2. Know the importance of safe manual handling in the workplace
  3. Know the importance of working safely at height in the workplace
  4. Know risks to health within a construction environment
  5. Know the importance of working around plant and equipment safely

Also available in a complete package including the CITB test and CSCS card dispatched directly to you.

Course Syllabus

  • Introduction

    Here we describe the purpose, range and structure of the course.


  • Section A1, A2, A3 and A4

    Sections A1 to A4 are covered in this unit.


  • Section A5 and A6

    In this unit, we cover Sections A5 and A6


  • B1 - Slips and Trips

    This section covers the type of accidents and injuries that are most common in the work place - slips and trips.


  • B2 - Working at height

    B2 covers different methods of working at height and the safety precautions that need to be adhered to for each of them


  • B3 - Moving vehicles and mobile plant

    This section covers site traffic and control measures to ensure good levels of health and safety.


  • B4 - Work equipment

    B4 covers types of work equipment and methods for their safe use.


  • B5 - Fire

    B5 covers fire hazards and precautions


  • B6 - Electricity

    This section covers the hazards and dangers associated with electricity and discusses what control measures can be put in place to ensure good levels of health and safety.


  • C1 - Manual handling

    In this section we define the meaning of the term "manual handling" and go on to discuss best practice in assessing the risk attached to manual handling operations and how to manually handle items safely.


  • C2 - Noise; and C3 - Vibration

    Section C2 and C3 respectively look at the hazards that can be created by excessive noise and vibration and what control measures can be put in place to ensure a good level of health and safety.


  • C4 - Hazardous substances; and C5 - Alcohol and drugs

    C4 looks at what we mean by hazardous substances, the legal requirements around the handling and storage of hazardous substances, and control measures to ensure a good level of health and safety. C5 looks at the possible adverse effects of alcohol and drugs in the workplace.


  • D1 - Health and safety signs; D2 - Personal protective equipment: and D3 – Welfare Facilities and Personal Hygiene

    In these section, we cover Health and safety signs; Personal protective equipment (PPE): and Welfare Facilities and Personal Hygiene respectively.


  • D4 -Emergencies and First Aid; and D5 – Reporting Accidents and Ill-Health

    D4 covers procedures for dealing with emergencies and the requirement to provide adequate first aid facilities. D5 looks at the importance of accurately recording all accidents and incidents of ill-health, including legal requirements to report certain accidents and types of ill-health that originate in the workplace.


  • Revision of Learning Outcome 1

    Revision of Learning Outcome 1 “Know the principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work.”


  • Revision of Learning Outcomes 2 & 3

    Learning Outcome 2 - Know the importance of safe manual handling in the workplace. Learning Outcome 3 - Know the importance of working safely at height in the workplace.


  • Revision of Learning Outcomes 4 & 5

    Learning Outcome 4 - Know risks to health within a construction environment. Learning Outcome 5 - Know the importance of working around plant and equipment safely.


Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
